Earth Has Fallen — Captive 3000 Arrives on Steam

The old-school sci-fi dungeon crawler Captive 3000 — free demo now, full game on Steam 6 November 2026. Grid movement, real-time combat, 13 handcrafted levels, and infinite dungeons beyond.

By Twin · @TwinTowerCity ·

In 1990, a British programmer named Tony Crowther released a game for the Amiga and Atari ST that was decades ahead of its time. Captive put players in control of four droids navigating a vast, procedurally generated prison complex in first-person — real-time combat, resource management, fog of war, and a cold science-fiction story told through the environment. It was a technical marvel, and one of the earliest games to ship effectively infinite procedural levels. Most people have never heard of it.

Captive 3000 continues what Crowther started — a modern old-school dungeon crawler built entirely from scratch, in the same spirit, for today's hardware. The free demo is playable now, and the full game arrives on Steam on 6 November 2026.

What Is Captive 3000?

Captive 3000 is a first-person, grid-based dungeon crawler in the tradition of Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, Black Crypt, and Hired Guns — with a dystopian sci-fi setting inspired by the 1990 classic Captive. Tile-based movement, real-time combat, resource management, maze exploration, and handcrafted levels, rendered in first-person using traditional sprites.

You control a decommissioned Optimus Mark I droid, reactivated on a distant planet after a distress signal from a forgotten prison. Your memory is wiped. An emergency console flickers to life. The alarm repeats a single message:

EARTH HAS FALLEN.

Guide the ancient automaton through the vast station, find your own prison, and stage your own rescue — while the truth of what happened to Earth, and to you, is revealed piece by piece.

Built the Old Way — and Fast

Many modern first-person crawlers use 3D engines to emulate the old grid movement, and often end up feeling sluggish. Captive 3000 is built the old way — traditional sprites, no 3D engine — and it's lightning fast. Shooting and stepping are instant. You'll need quick reactions to dodge projectiles, and smart positioning to survive.

The result is a game that feels like the classics but plays without the friction: no downloads to try it, no emulator, no disk-swapping. Just the maze, bigger than you are.

The Game

  • 13 handcrafted levels make up Mission 01, each with three interconnected floors. The early levels are small and teach the mechanics; the later ones are vast and can take hours each. Completing Mission 01 is 50+ hours of exploration and combat.

  • Tactical real-time combat against 25 enemy types, using dozens of weapons and items — from slow early pistols to rapid lasers, ion pulse weapons, and flamers. Attack from the side or behind, dodge, and use corridors and cover. Manage energy, health, shield, gold, and ammo as you go.

  • The stalker — an invulnerable enemy that cannot be killed, only evaded. Run into it with your shield down and it's instant death. Track it on the minimap, trap it on safe tiles with skill, and keep your shield charged.

  • A hidden story told through 26 illustrated chapters hidden across the levels — each mural a fragment of the truth about humanity's fall and your true identity. Explore every corridor; the story unfolds as your memory returns.

  • Infinite dungeons beyond the singularity. Finish Mission 01 and the system generates endless new, unique missions — deterministically seeded, so every generated level looks and plays consistently for all players. There is no final floor, only the next one.

A Note on the Original

Captive 3000 exists because the 1990 original meant something. As the developer puts it: "The original 1990 Captive was my favorite childhood game. Created by Antony Crowther, inspired by Dungeon Master, and published by the now-defunct Mindscape, it was decades ahead of its time, with infinite procedurally generated missions and a unique sci-fi setting. Captive 3000 continues what Tony Crowther started. I hope you enjoy it."

Built by One Person

Captive 3000 was built from scratch — over 100,000 lines of original code across the project, with no game engine — by a single developer. Cloud saves, a live global leaderboard, and cross-platform play (browser, Steam, and tablet) all sit on top of a custom-built foundation.

DISCLAIMER: Captive 3000 is inspired by the 1990 classic Captive. It is not affiliated with the original and is not a copy or a remake. It is built entirely from scratch and does not copy or reuse any code, art, music, or level designs from the original. It is a completely new and independent "Dungeon Master in Space" style project.
